Proud
to be a vast American multinational.
|
|
|
| My paternal grandparents came from the Azores,
a group of Portuguese islands about 300 miles west of
the mainland. In the Summer of 2002, I visited Sao Miguel,
the largest of the islands and the one that my grandparents
came from, with my brother Rick, his wife Patti, and their
children Jacki and RJ. |

| Travelling
companions: Patti, RJ, Jacki, and Rick |

| Fishing
boats in Ponta Delgada harbor. |

| Jacki
smiles innocently while her father pilfers the local flora. |
 |
| RJ
takes in the stunning scenery. Of Rayman II. |
 |
 |
| RJ,
an American boy abroad. |
 |
 |
| The
town of Furnas, known for its bubbling caldieras. |
 |
 |
| Lakes
and hills of São Miguel. |
 |
My
grandmother came from Capelas, on the northwest shore
of the Island. She grew up on Rua do Rosario, pictured
here.
We
were fortunate to be there for the Festa de Nossa
Senhora da Apresentação, a religious feast day.

"University of Urban Style." Like you needed
me to tell you that. |
Residents
of Capelas prepare the procession route with flowers. |

 |
| The
procession begins at the church and wends its way through
the streets. |
