Zany Libya

Every once in a while, a country does something that makes you smile. Frequently, that country is Libya. Don't try calling them today to thank them, though, because you'll get the following recorded message:

"International communications are interrupted until 6pm to denounce the odious crimes committed by the Italians against the Libyan people."

They are, of course, protesting the invasion of Libya by Italy. In 1911. Ha! That'll show 'em! I love those guys!

Top that, North Korea!

Oak Ridge, TN

My friends Liz and Dave got married this weekend in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Oak Ridge was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers during the Manhattan Project, so there is a decidedly Atomic Age feel to the place. This carries over to the Museum of Science and Energy, one of the premier local attractions.

In order to keep residents from being depressed, Oak Ridge installed this giant atom of lithium.

A retired gas centrifuge for enriching uranium, donated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory to the town of Oak Ridge as a token of appreciation. I bought three at the gift shop for friends in Iraq.

Perhaps the only game more popular with children than Name That Coal is...

...Find the Faulty Weld! Kids love welding.

Trapped in the leaking reactor core by a the safety lock, Cody tries to make the best of his situation.

The Museum provides plenty of inspiration for would-be scientists or, as in this case, mad scientists.

Da-na-na-na-na-na-na

Science is under attack in this country. It is under attack from those who would have you believe that science does not enrich our lives. It is under attack from those who would have you believe that science does not provide an irreplaceable element of the spiritual and moral guidance we need to understand the universe and our place in it.

To these naysayers, I feel I need only point to the following rebuttal. It is far more eloquent than anything a human could say.

And it's in color.
