Beans, Beans, Beans!

Radioisms

Some months ago, Julie and I heard an NPR correspondent refer to Afghani warlord Gulbeddin Hekmatyar as "a major trouble person in the region." We have enjoyed this formulation ever since, and when Isabel tries to pull the VCR down onto her head -- which happens a fair bit -- we tell her that she's a major trouble bean in our region.

I was reminded of this this morning when a presenter for the BBC World Service referred to a space agency spokesman as "a NASA space person."

Newt O'Gingrich

I went to the Irish Embassy this week to file Isabel's citizenship paperwork. On top of the massive sheaf of documents was my Irish passport. The consular officer verified the photocopy and handed the passport back to me with a chuckle, saying, "it's funny: in this photo you look just like Newt Gingrich."

Backlog

We've had a busy summer and not all the photos we've wanted to post have made it up. Here's an attempt to get through the backlog.

At a wedding in June. Always a bridesmaid...

Julie and Isabel took a trip to Omaha in June to see Julie's family. Let's go to the videotape:

Hanging with Aunt Kathy.

A quartet of cousins.

They then proceeded to Billings, Montana, where people wear cowboy hats without irony, and Julie's sister Anne and her family live. I joined them there.

Swimming at the hotel pool.

Sleeping on Aunt Anne.

At cousin Jon's Eagle Scout ceremony.

"Toilet Signs" of "Seattle"

Via Found Magazine. Tip of the lid to Chris Bolinger, Esq., who will cringe at my brazen posting of the photo without permission, express or implied, of the copyright holder.

Josie and the Pussycats

Isabel's friend Josie came over to play today.

Isabel gives Josie a well-deserved pat on the back for a job well done.

Julie tries twins on for size, and smiles despite the lower back pain.

Josie and Isabel have a lot in common, including a love of playground swings and a passion for comical hats.

I think she looks like Julie, don't you?

Got Lactose Intolerance?

In the past week or so, ads have popped up on the DC Metro with the slogan "Got Lactose Intolerance?" It then goes on to describe lactose intolerance and states that it disproportionately affects people of color. "If you are lactose intolerant, you may have grounds for a lawsuit." It gives a website address as www.milkmakesmesick.com. The graphic is of four people anxiously waiting to get into the bathroom.

I thought it was a joke -- a pretty good one -- but the website appears to be serious.

I love this town.

Toilet Signs of Bethesda

Using the cameraphone in the bathroom is normally bad form, but hey, I'm all about bad form.
